Immanuel Wallerstein Wallerstein first became interested in world affairs as a teenager in New York City, and was particularly interested in the anti-colonial movement in India at the time. Immanuel Wallerstein, a sociologist who shook up the field with his ideas about Western domination of the modern world and the very nature of sociological inquiry, died on Aug. 31 at his home in Immanuel Wallerstein developed one of the most known world-system approached in 1974, but offers several definitions for it. His goal was to replace the flawed systems offered in the 19th century, built from separate logics, when his observations showed that world systems theories should be overlapping.

In a reflective essay about his career written in 2000, Immanuel Wallerstein—the American sociologist, economic historian, and world-systems analyst, who died at 88 on August 31 at his home in Connecticut—wrote that “it was Africa that was responsible for undoing the more stultifying parts of my educational heritage.”
